Maybe it is his youthful collegiate looks, or the fact that he isn’t Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, or Sean Hannity- but President Barack Obama probably wasn’t expecting the interview he got with Fox News’ Bret Baier.
People from both sides of the political aisle were surprised when the White House agreed to an interview with Fox News. It wasn’t that long ago that the White House urged other networks to disregard Fox News Channel as a real news network. It was the “Mao loving” former White House Communications Director Anita Dunn who said Fox News was “opinion
journalism masquerading as news”.
Speaking to ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, Senior Advisor to Obama David Axelrod even asked other media outlets to join the White House in saying that Fox News is “not a news organization”.
Axelrod continued, “Other news organizations like yours (ABC) ought not to treat them that way. We’re not going to treat them that way.”
The only reason Fox News has been a threat to the Obama Administration’s “comfort zone” is that they have been the only television news outlet that has been consistently performing the duty journalists are supposed to do- be the “watchdog” for the people- ask the tough questions.
Barack Obama was the media’s poster boy for the perfect politician- he was “the messiah”. The mainstream media (MSM) went out of their way to avoid reporting stories that would shine the light on Obama’s true past. The MSM actually sacrificed their own credibility and proffessionality to make sure their guy got voted in. Anyone with common sense could see what what happening.
Now that Barack Obama in in the highest office in the free world, he and his administration expect the same treatment they got during the 2008 Presidential campaign. And news outlets such as MSNBC appear to be closer to the Obama propaganda channel then an actual news network. The Obama Administration expect the press to behave a certain way when they are in the room.
They have taken a stance closer to that of one of Communism’s heroes Vladimir Lenin.
Lenin himself said, “The press should be not only a collective propagandist and a collective agitator, but also a collective organizer of the masses.”
But this past Wednesday Fox News Bret Baier wasn’t about to step in line with the rest of the media. In less then an hour, Baier took the MSM to school on how to give an interview. He was prepared, he was firm- but respectful. Baier stepped in when Obama tried to turn the interview into a stump speech.
Had someone from Katie Couric or someone from MSNBC been performing this interview it would have been like watching a “journalistic back massage”. Viewers may have even learned what Mrs. Obama was planting in her garden this year. The MSM would not be doing the job of “watcdog for the people”, but rather they would be acting more like propagandists for the White House.
In the end- Americans got to witness our President talk about “his bill” and how he didn’t think that the “process” really mattered.
Mr. President, it is all about “the process”. In fact, it is “the process” that makes this whole thing so wrong.
Thank you Bret Baier, for doing your job. You have stepped into a new class as a journalist- higher then most in the media will ever know.
